Time’s Monster- How History Makes History

Pacific Coast Conference on British Studies - Book Prize 2020-2021

Priya Satia’s Time’s Monster forces historians to turn their gaze on themselves and the active
role the writing of history has had in creating and justifying the inequities of today’s world.
Drawing on a wealth of scholarship, and ranging widely across time and space, she searingly
demonstrates how since the eighteenth century the narratives of British historians shaped
imperial policies and practices around the globe, serving to justify conquests of peoples and the
planet. While this elegantly written and powerful book is a sobering reminder of our ethical and
political obligations as historians it is hopeful and suggestive of how we may decolonize our
discipline and our field.
