Job Opportunity: Lector in Hindi, Yale University
The South Asian Studies Council at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University invites applications for a Lector in Hindi beginning July 1, 2020 for a three- year term, renewable, with rank dependent on qualifications/experience. Full-time Lectors at Yale teach six courses or the equivalent per academic year, which is often realized as five term courses with a sixth course equivalent of advising and/or other administrative service. Primary duties each academic year will include teaching elementary courses (2) and intermediate courses (2) in Hindi in four learning-skill areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The fifth course will focus on literary, social, political, cultural and/or sociolinguistics topics related to Hindi (as determined on the basis of the appointee’s qualifications and expertise).
For the sixth course equivalent, the Lector will advise students and participate in program building of South Asian Studies at Yale, specifically, in developing overseas language and other study opportunities. He/She will also engage in developing the broad curriculum and the pedagogic materials for Hindi. We are especially interested in candidates whose language and content expertise will complement existing cross-disciplinary scholarship in the Council. The individual will also teach through Yale’s shared course initiative, in which students from partner institutions participate online in beginning and advanced language courses.
Qualifications All applicants should have: 1) native or near-native fluency in Hindi; 2) strong English communication skills; 3) experience in teaching Hindi as a second language in a college or university environment; 4) an M.A. or other advanced degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. South Asian languages, literatures, linguistics); 5) demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for in-class teaching/acquisition, knowledge of overseas language and related study sites, experience with technologically-aided language learning methods and their development, interest in the broader field of South Asian Studies and/or other relevant disciplines.
Salary is commensurate with experience and background.
