The Wire, Podcast: The Slow Suffocation and Isolation of Muslims Is a Risky Game to Play

Thomas Blom Hansen

Thomas Blom Hansen is a social scientist who teaches at Stanford. He has been coming to India for decades and has written several books on the country’s political and social processes.

He says the one big change he has seen is the growing violence in the country. He tells Sidharth Bhatia in this podcast that even police statistics, which may not be always accurate, show that violence has increased. And it is directed at Muslims, Dalits and other minorities, he says. “And impunity has grown, there is so little prosecution of the perpetrators.”

All this could lead to a dangerous situation but he offers some hope to. “India’s saving grace is its diversity.”
