Meet Srihari Nageswaran: 2022-23 South Asia-Markaz Fellow

Srihari Nageswaran

Meet our 2022-23 South Asia-Markaz Fellow, Srihari Nageswaran!

What do you want people to know about you?

I am Srihari, and if shortened, I prefer “Hari” instead of “Sri.” I’m a junior studying literature and anthropology. I grew up in Maryland. On campus, I edit Caesura and am an RA at a certain academic theme dorm. In my free time, I nap.

What made you apply for the fellowship?

I was always interested in South Asia, initially because of the first-generation identity crisis (caught between two worlds, mangoes versus apples, Jalebi Baby, etc.), but later because of a more organic interest in the region’s politics and culture as well as conversations with other people from there. I had the pleasure of studying Dravidian politics and Tamil cultural history at Oxford this past spring and was excited by the opportunity to regift some of that knowledge in the form of virtual events for anybody who is interested, regardless of campus affiliation. I’ve enjoyed many of the Center for South Asia’s events in the past (and am still upset that I didn’t get to see Arivu’s talk this summer), so I was excited to see what I could contribute to this community.

What are you interested in accomplishing as the South Asia-Markaz Fellow?

I would love to invite scholars and researchers of contemporary Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, and their respective diasporas to Stanford.
