Call for Papers- Moving Beyond Barriers 6th Biennial Graduate Student Conference

September 13th and 14th, 2019

University of Texas at Austin

Abstract Deadlines: June 14th, 2019

The Texas Asia Conference at the University of Texas at Austin invites graduate students working on original research projects across disciplines and across traditional academic divisions of Asia to present their work. This year the conference will take place on September 13th and 14th, 2019 at the University of Texas at Austin. With this year’s conference theme, Moving Beyond Barriers, we invite panels and individual paper proposals that explore various approaches to the terms “movement” and “barriers” as they relate to the study of Asia. We welcome applications from graduate students in all academic disciplines engaged in research on South, Southeast, Central, and East Asia, and their communities in the diaspora. These disciplines include but are not limited to anthropology, linguistics, ethnomusicology, film studies, cultural history, art and architectural history, literature, political science, religious studies, sociology, and gender studies. In addition to an exciting range of panel presentations and a lecture from two keynote speakers, a more casual program of receptions will provide ample time for less structured discussion and exchange, something essential to bringing together the wider community of students and professors. In the past, selected papers delivered at the conference were published in the South Asia Graduate Research Journal (SAGAR). We aim to publish selected papers again this year. Suggested content areas include but are not limited to: Cross cultural dialogue Diaspora movement and community Movement theory Intertextuality Connected Histories Literary Criticism Religious ethics and movement Performance Embodiment Submission guidelines: Deadline for individual paper and panel abstract submission: June 14th, 2019.
