SGS Summer Film Festival: The Stranger

Film change: Please note that the previously planned screening of Kapoor & Sons will no longer take place, we apologize for the inconvenience.

Directed by Satyajit Ray (India, 1991), The Stranger involves a bourgeois couple who are taken off guard when a man claiming to be the wife’s long-lost uncle sends word that he will be coming to stay with them after years of travel. Though they fear he’s an impostor, they tentatively let the man into their home, commencing an eye-opening emotional journey for the family. A humanist exploration of class, faith, and tradition versus progress, The Stranger is a bittersweet good-bye from one of the world’s most important filmmakers.

A Q&A will follow Ankita Deb, a Ph.D. candidate in Stanford's Department of Art & Art History, who also has an MA and MPhil in film studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University.

This film is part of the annual Stanford Global Studies Summer Film Festival running most Wednesdays from June 13 to September 12. This year's festival features 10 films from around the world that focus on the theme “Friends & Family: Tales from Near and Far.” This is the final screening for this year's festival, if you would like to receive information about next year's festival, please sign-up for our newsletter.
