India after Ayodhya: Citizenship and Democracy in India

Conversation with Anna Bigelow (Stanford) and Aishwary Kumar (UC-Santa Cruz)

On November 9, 2019, the Indian Supreme Court ruled in favor of litigants who intend to build a Hindu temple on the site where the Babri Masjid, the sixteenth-century mosque, had been destroyed in 1992.

Exactly one month after the Ayodhya ruling, the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was passed in the Indian Parliament, which was followed by protests around the world.

What are the implications for the “idea of India”—for the state, for citizenship, for the Republic —of the Ayodhya ruling, of the passing of the CAA, and of the protests and the government response to them?

Join us for a discussion and analysis of recent events in India, and their implication for India as a secular democracy.
